Why Choose Chiropractic For Neck Pain?

Chiropractic restores mobility

Chiropractors use their hands to make spinal adjustments, along with massage, traction and exercise, to properly align the body’s musculoskeletal structure. These chiropractic adjustments restore mobility to joints, caused perhaps by falling over, a car accident, a sports injury or repetitive stress.

Study on Neck Pain

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated either chiropractic treatment (with massage, exercise and education), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (drugs, counseling and education) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcome showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care.

See your Chiropractor for neck pain, if…

  • The pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days
  • You cannot look to the right or left without pain
  • You feel that you must use over-the-counter pain medication just to get through the day and are using it regularly to treat your neck pain
  • Your pain started in the neck, but has moved to numbness or tingling in your hands
  • Your neck pain is worse when you first wake up in the morning, but begins to feel a little better as the day progresses
  • You have frequent headaches associated with your neck pain

Chiropractic Help

Doctors of Chiropractic help people every day, naturally, without medication or surgery. If you would like to know whether chiropractic care could help you, please get in touch with us at Lagos Health Chiropractic Clinic.

Text Neck or Tech Neck: It’s Time To Be Careful

We see them in restaurants waiting for their Cataplana de Peixe, in the coffee shops waiting for their Pastel de Nata and in the Finanças waiting to pay for something – people who seem inseparable from their mobile devices!

Heads down, shoulders hunched, you can see them, young and old, texting or scrolling through their messages on social media. Keeping the head and shoulders in this position for prolonged periods can lead to what is now commonly called ‘text neck’ (the Americans call it ‘tech neck’).

But what causes it and how can it be alleviated?

  • Pain In The Neck: One of the main signs of text neck is a stiff or aching neck, caused by spending too much time with the neck in a downward position while looking at the phone or laptop. We tell our patients to try to hold their phone in such a way so as they won’t be tilting their head down as much. Gentle neck stretches may also help.
  • Shouldering The Burden: In addition to neck pain, the other tell-tale sign is shoulder pain. Many people hunch their shoulders while holding onto their phone and texting. We suggest giving your shoulders a rest by stretching them out periodically and practicing gentle forward and backward shoulder rolls.
  • Headaches: Headaches can be common, either from tilting the head down to look at the phone display or having the head too far forward over the shoulders while reading from a tablet or laptop. Try to lift your phone up to eye level or re-adjust your sitting position.

What does good posture mean to you? Head up, shoulders back, chest out? Along with your bottom tucked under and a mild tightening of your abdominals, your mum was probably right when she nagged you about standing up straight.

Prevent back and neck pain

Your posture plays a key role in your spinal health, helping to prevent back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. In any event, even if you have a spinal condition, try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine.

If you suffer from back pain, you may be consciously or subconsciously adopting an unnatural posture to try to limit movements that you fear will create potential pain. Unless there’s a fracture or other serious problem, try not to take on an unnatural or stiff posture.

Warning signs of poor posture

Be on the lookout for any of the following possible warning signs of poor posture:

  • Back pain that’s worse at certain times of the day or week
  • Pain that starts in the neck and moves downwards into the upper back, lower back and extremities
  • Pain that goes away after switching positions while sitting or standing
  • Sudden back pain that’s experienced with a new bed, a new sofa or a new car

If you’re experiencing any of these warning signs, take note of your posture and seek professional help. At Lagos Health Chiropractic Clinic we can identify and treat your problem and advise you on the best way to manage any symptoms. Call us on +351 282 768 044.

Happy New Year…and a Happy New You!

How did you feel when you woke up this morning? Any aches and pains? Any stiffness? Perhaps you’ve been carrying something heavy recently? Perhaps something that weighs about 70 or 80kg?

Actually, that’s about the same weight as your head, shoulders, arms, rib cage, upper spine and muscles added together. And remarkably, just two vertebrae (L4 and L5…yes, they’ve got numbers) in your lumbar spine are supporting all that weight…18 hours a day…7 days a week…12 months a year!

It’s no wonder you get lower back pain!

your spine and how important it is

Plus, of course, the rest of your hard-working spine has to do lots of other things – allowing you to move and holding you upright, while at the same time protecting your spinal cord.   But that’s not all. Coming out from between those vertebrae and discs are the nerves from your spinal cord, going off to every part of your body, sending messages back to your brain.

Imagine if those nerves get compressed, twisted and knocked about too! You’re going to feel some pain. Should you take a pill or rub in a cream? Remember, any pain-killing medication may reduce the pain for a while, but the underlying cause of the pain remains.

Perhaps now is the time to consider chiropractic care.

You only have one spine. Peforming several vital functions, it’s important to look after it. And at Lagos Health Chiropractic, we can look after it! Come and see us. We’re in the big pink building just across the road from the Lidl supermarket. Or call us on +351 282 768 044.

Long hours of sitting can jeopardize your lumbar spine and can even be felt in the middle-back and neck. Furthermore, you put the surrounding muscles under undue strain, only adding to the pain. Unfortunately, long periods of sitting are becoming more commonplace in today’s computer age.

Top Tips on improving your posture and reducing irritating back and neck pain.

This process begins all too early in life, so maybe it’s time to ask: “How many hours a day do I spend sitting down?” If it’s two or more, perhaps it’s time to get off the sofa and get your spinal alignment checked by a qualified and registered chiropractor.

5 Top Tips On Posture and How To Prevent Back Pain & Neck Pain

1. Adjust your seat so that your feet are flat on the ground or on a foot rest.

2. Sit with your hips higher than your knees and your eyes level with the centre of the computer screen.

3. Relax when sitting in your chair, making sure you have your bottom against the seat back and your shoulder blades are touching the back-rest of the chair.

4. Your arms should be flat and your elbows level with the desk or table you are using. Try to use a seat with arm rests.

5. Don’t sit at the computer for more than 40 minutes. When you take a break, walk around and stretch a little.

Get Checked By Your Chiropractor

If you have back or neck pain, or just feeling a slight twinge, perhaps now is the time to have a comprehensive examination by a trained, qualified and registered Doctor of Chiropractic, who can also advise you on all posture and pain-related issues.

Your Spine And How Important It Is – Lagos Health Chiropractic

Do you have one spine…or several? The answer, of course, is that you only have ONE. And, as it’s in use every minute of every day, it’s vitally important to look after it!

There are five important functions of the spine:

Your spine and how important it is

In the words of that old spine song, “Your hip bone’s connected to your back bone…”

  • Movement: With 24 vertebrae, it’s able to twist and bend. However, because it can move a little in many directions, you can easily injure it.
  • Protection: The vertebrae protect your spinal cord and all the nerves that come from it. As you may know, the spinal cord is the first thing that develops in life and it controls every single organ and function of the body.
  • Posture: The spine holds up upright. Therefore, if it’s crooked, your posture will also be crooked.
  • Support: The vertebrae in the neck support the head, which weighs 9-13lbs (or about 5kg). Lower down, we have just TWO vertebrae in the lower back that support all the weight above, which is about two-thirds of your total body weight.
  • Attachment: Your back and neck muscles attach to your spinal column. If the spine is not straight, the muscles on one side of your body will not be balanced and therefore will stretch to compensate, while the muscles on the other side will shorten. Muscle imbalance pulls the vertebrae out of alignment.

Finally, take a look at yourself in a full-length mirror. If you see that one shoulder is lower than the other, or your pelvis appears twisted, it really is time for a chiropractic check-up.

Having good posture (head up, shoulders back) looks amazing, but good posture also plays a key role in your spinal health, helping to prevent back and neck pain.

The following are warning signs of poor posture:

  • Back pain that is worse at certain times of the day
  • Pain that starts in the neck and moves downwards into the upper and lower back
  • Pain that goes away after changing sitting or standing positions
  • Back pain that comes and goes for months

Variations in posture, forward head posture, poor posture, kyphosis of the spine

Everyday activities

It’s easy to forget about good posture when you’re on your smartphone or on the go, but try to use these times to notice when certain postures and back pain episodes coincide.

Sit with support

The act of sitting requires an incredible amount of muscular effort to keep the body erect, so a good sitting posture is important. For example, don’t sit on the edge of your chair and lean towards your computer…sit back and utilise the chair’s back support.

Keep moving

Maintaining a static position for more than twenty minutes is tough on the back, so by simply changing position or stretching, the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and any associated discomfort reduced.

Aching Backs and Stiff Necks

aching back, chiropractic, Lagos Health Chiropractic - Back Pain, neck pain, stiff neck No Comments »

During the holiday season we see lots of patients with bad backs and stiff neck issues! Research has shown that sleeping in a strange bed is one of the culprits! Judging from what our patients say, their aching back and stiff neck has been caused by either sitting for hours in a cramped aeroplane seat, sleeping in a different hotel bed or sleeping underneath the air conditioning that’s blasting out cold air.

So, these tips should help…

  • Try to stretch your legs a bit on the flight home…if, of course, you can squeeze past the refreshment trolley!
  • You can’t change the hotel mattress, so try to have a stroll before breakfast to loosen up muscles and joints.

“I knew I’d get a bad back after sleeping on that lumpy mattress!”

  • Finally, to avoid a stiff neck, DON’T sleep with the air-con on all night! Have it on for half an hour before you go to bed to cool the room, but then turn it off once you snuggle down. If you wake up sticky during the night, turn it on for 5 minutes and then switch it off. In the morning, get up slowly and try not to make any sudden neck movements.

The Amazing Benefits of Good Posture…And How Chiropractic Can Maintain Them

chiropractic, health and wellness, Lagos Health Chiropractic - Back Pain, neck pain, posture No Comments »

Good posture is the position that is attained when the joints are biomechanically sound and able to move in the direction they are designed to and the spine is aligned. Maintaining posture involves learning how to train your body to move and function where the least strain is placed on bones, joints and soft tissues.

A body in equilibrium will attain its alignment and continue proper mobility.

Good Posture Checklist

Training your body to sit upright can be a challenge. Follow this checklist to learn the proper way to sit with good posture:good posture and poor posture when sitting at a desk

  • Keep a straight back, maintaining all three natural curves in the spine
  • Distribute weight evenly on both hips
  • Keep head and neck aligned over shoulders
  • Sit back in a chair – your back should be supported by the seat back

Health Benefits of Good Posture

There are many benefits associated with standing tall or sitting upright, such as a boost in self-esteem and reduced negative mood. Good posture can:

  • Optimize breathing and circulation
  • Maintain bones and joints in correct alignment, so that muscles are used properly and efficiently
  • Decrease stress on soft tissues: ligaments, muscles, tendons and discs
  • Prevent neck or back pain

Remember, if you’re ever troubled by neck or back pain, or have concerns about your muscles and tendons, come and talk to us at Lagos Health Chiropractic – we’re the experts in spine, muscle and joint pain. We’re in the big, pink building by the Lidl roundabout. Find us online or call 282 768 044.
